As an artist you’ve started to see the value in communicating with fans so you’ve started building an email list.
Here are a few tips and lessons I’ve learned along the way:
1. DO NOT SPAM. Don’t do it! Ever! Get permission from everyone you want to receive your messages. If you are at all unsure, don’t send that email.
2. Be deliberate in setting up your email list and in deciding what information you want to collect. Name and email are the basics. If you’re planning to promote shows outside of your local area then it may be helpful to ask for city and state so you can target only people in a particular area about an upcoming show. You may also want to know how they heard about you. Doesn’t hurt to ask.
3. Try sending your email newsletter out at different times of day and on different days. You’ll be able to learn what days/times are most effective.
4. Do anything you can to keep your emails “personal”. It creates a connection and leads to more action from fans.
5. Keep trying new things to see what works and what does not. Music fans are a different breed and many things that may work for other industries will not for music.
6. Make it easy for people to manage and update their subscription. Very easy. You’ll find that more fans will change their info and actually stay on your list if they can control their subscription.
7. DO NOT SPAM. It needs to be mentioned a second time. Sending unsolicited email is the quickest way to lose fans. You’re guaranteed to lose more than you’ll gain. If some artist spams me or adds me to some newsletter… it irritates me. Don’t do it.
